Speaker Profiles
Martin Wolf

Martin Wolf studied Philosophy at Nuffield College, Oxford University before joining World Bank’s Young Professionals programme, becoming a senior economist in 1974. He went on to become Director of Studies at the Trade Policy Research Centre in London before joining the Financial Times in 1987, where he is currently associate editor and chief economics commentator. He has won numerous awards, his most recent being AMEC Lifetime Achievement Award at the Workworld Media Awards in 2007, “Commentator of the Year” at the Business Journalist of the Year Awards in 2008 and the Ludwig Erhard Prize in 2009. He became a forum fellow at the annual meeting of World Economics Forum in 1996 and was awarded a CBE in 2000 for services to financial journalism. The London School of Economics also have awarded him with an honorary degree in Economics. He is considered to be one of the worlds leading public policy intellectuals.
Alex Callinicos

Alex Callinicos studied at Balliol College, Oxford University where he first became interested in revolutionary politics. He was a Junior Research Fellow in Contemporary Social Thought at St Peter’s College, Oxford University and he taught social and political theory at the University of York before joining King’s. Considered to be a prolific writer for socialist and academic presses, he has written numerous books on subjects like Marxism, political philosophy and social theory. His best known books include The Revolutionary Ideas of Karl Marx (1983), Against Postmodernism (1990) and An Anti-Capitalist Manifesto (2003). He has written extensively for the New Left Review, is a member of the editorial board of International Socialism and is a British correspondent for Actuel Marx. He has actively contributed to the development of the movement for another globalization through his work in the World Social Forum and the European Social Forum. He is also currently working in international political economy.
